Virginia Congresswoman Barbara Comstock has urged the South-Asian-American community to actively participate in local politics and become an integral part of American democracy. She said this while addressing as chief guest an Eid Milan reception organized by South Asia Minorities Alliance Foundation (SAMAF) in Virginia. The reception was attended by a large number of South-Asian-Americans belonging to Pakistan, Afghanistan, India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. A large delegation representing Gilgit-Baltistan region of Pakistan also attended the event.
Prominent SAMAF member Salim Shaikh and other speakers thanked Congresswoman for her presence at the event and drew her attention toward issues faced by Virginians on a daily basis. They also expressed their desire to play an active role in domestic politics.
The leading Voice of Karachi (VOK) member Jamshed Warsi highlighted the growing importance of South Asian community in the United States and their potential role in shaping future politics in the country. He also urged the US Administration to work more closely with South Asian diaspora in the USA to ﬁnd solutions to some longstanding regional issues that the people of that highly sensitive and important region have been facing for decades.
Jamshed Warsi is also working with some senior Republicans to organize a similar event in Houston, Texas, which is also expected to be well-attended by South-Asian-Americans.
In her address, Congresswoman Barbara Comstock acknowledged the growing population and importance of South Asian community in the USA, particularly in Virginia, and urged the community to actively participate in domestic politics. She particularly urged the South Asian youths to become part of the government and legislative bodies and promised to make efforts to provide internships at the Capitol Hill and White House to youths from South Asian community. She also promised that as a member of transportation committee in Congress, she’ll look into the issue of high toll taxes in Virginia.
The lawmaker from Virginia congratulated the event organizers for arranging such a diverse and well-attended Eid Milan reception and promised to be a regular guest at such events in future.
A large number of local youths, men and women offered the Congresswoman their full support, offered her bouquets of ﬂowers and took pictures with her.
SAMAF is actively working to highlight issues faced by South Asian community in the US as well as in the region.
